With the shift to remote work, having a functional and aesthetically pleasing home office has become more important than ever. A well-designed workspace can boost productivity, enhance creativity, and make working from home an enjoyable experience. In this blog post, we'll share tips on creating a home office that is both productive and stylish.
1. Choose the Right Location
The first step in designing a productive home office is selecting the right location. Consider the following factors when choosing your workspace:
Quiet Environment: Choose a spot in your home that is free from distractions and noise. Noise canceling headphones will help if this just isn't an option. A quiet environment helps you focus and increases productivity.
Natural Light: If possible, set up your office near a window to take advantage of natural light. If you work on a computer, facing the light so it is behind your monitor is ideal positioning. This will reduce glare and will look better for video calls. Natural light has been shown to improve mood, energy levels, and overall well-being.
Privacy: Ensure your workspace offers some degree of privacy, especially if you share your home with others. This will help you concentrate and maintain a professional environment during virtual meetings.
2. Invest in Ergonomic Furniture
Comfort is key to productivity, so invest in ergonomic furniture that supports your health and well-being.
Desk: Choose a desk that is the right height for you and provides enough space either lengthwise or vertically. Desk height ranges from 28 - 30 inches, again chose a height on the shorter side if you are closer to 5 feet tall, and taller side if you are closer to 6 feet. Consider a standing desk or a desk converter to alternate between sitting and standing, or a walking treadmill specifically designed for desks.
Chair: An ergonomic chair with adjustable height, lumbar support, and armrests is crucial for maintaining good posture and reducing the risk of back pain. If you sit for more than a few hours a day, this is where you should allocate a bigger chunk of your budget. Make sure the chair is appropriate for your height. Standard seat heights are 18 - 23 inches; select a seat that is closer to 18 inches high if you are close to 5 feet tall, and a seat with a higher range if you are closer to 6 feet tall.
Monitor Stand: Position your monitor at eye level to prevent neck strain. A monitor stand or adjustable monitor wall-mount arm can help achieve the ideal height.
Computer peripherals: Consider a keyboard tray, ergonomic mouse, or keyboard to prevent discomfort if you use the computer for several hours a day.
3. Optimize Your Layout
An efficient layout can enhance workflow and productivity. Consider these layout tips:
Accessibility: Arrange your desk and storage so that frequently used items are within easy reach and store non-essential items away from the workspace or out of side to reduce feelings of clutter. This minimizes time spent searching for supplies and keeps your workspace organized and stress-free.
Work Zones: Create designated areas for different tasks, such as a computer zone for digital work, a writing zone for paperwork, and a storage zone for files and supplies. This is an incredible time saver so you're not shuffling things around all the time, which leads to further disorganization.
Cable Management: Keep cables tidy and out of sight with cable organizers, clips, or a cable management box. This not only looks better but also reduces clutter and potential hazards.
4. Incorporate Ample Storage
Effective storage solutions are essential for maintaining an organized and clutter-free workspace. Transparent storage is effective for items you use frequently as a visual reminder and as a way to keep track of volume. Opaque storage is best for storage of things that do not add to the aesthetic of the room that would otherwise add a cluttered look. Lighter colors and reflected surfaces add brightness and create volume, where darker colors and textured surfaces minimize volume.
Shelving Units: Install shelves to store books, files, and keep decorative items to a minimum, playing with empty space. Floating shelves can save floor space and add a modern touch to your office.
Drawers and Cabinets: Use drawers and cabinets to keep office supplies, documents, and personal items out of sight. Label drawers and use to quickly find what you need.
Desk Organizers: Desk organizers, such as trays, file holders, and pen cups, can keep your desktop tidy and ensure that everything has its place. If your main color palette is neutral, this is place to add a fun pop of color.
5. Personalize Your Space
A personalized workspace can boost creativity and make your home office feel more inviting. Sign up for my free guide on interior design styles for tips on generating a cohesive style in your office.
Here are some ideas:
Decor: Add personal touches like artwork, photos, and plants to create a space that reflects your style and personality. Keep in mind when you are decorating, eyes need empty visual space as well, don't be afraid to use less.
Color Scheme: Choose a color scheme that inspires you. Calming colors like blues and greens can promote focus, while energizing colors like yellows and oranges can boost creativity. If your workspace is small, stick to lighter more neutral colors for walls and surfaces and small bits of color in your decor and accents. Check out my blog on color balance for further tips.
Inspirational Items: Surround yourself with items that motivate and inspire you, such as a vision board, motivational quotes, or awards and achievements. A photo or two of loved ones and family gives your office a personal touch and can help motivate us. Too many personal photos can look unprofessional; consider a few small photos in frames and opt for art for the walls.
6. Enhance Lighting
Proper lighting is crucial for reducing eye strain and creating a pleasant work environment. An office requires 50 - 100 lumens per sq ft with a Daylight temperature around 4,000 K. Task lights and camera lights can be warmer in temperature around 3,000 K.
Task Lighting: Use task lighting, such as a desk lamp, to provide focused illumination for reading and detailed work. Adjustable lamps allow you to direct light where you need it most. Consider a lamp with a USB charger for bonus charging access.
Ambient Lighting: Ensure your home office has adequate ambient lighting to evenly illuminate the entire space. Consider recessed lighting and/or track lighting with will take up minimal space and provide multiple sources of light. Lighting strips can add ambient lighting when installation of additional electrical receptacles is limited.
Natural Light: Maximize natural light by positioning your desk near a window and using sheer curtains to diffuse sunlight without causing glare.
7. Maintain a Clean and Organized Space
A clean and organized workspace promotes productivity and reduces stress. Develop a routine to keep your office tidy:
Daily Tidying: Spend a few minutes at the end of each day tidying up your desk and putting away items. This will help you start the next day with a clean slate.
Weekly Cleaning: Dedicate time each week to dusting, vacuuming, and disinfecting surfaces. Regular cleaning prevents clutter from accumulating and keeps your workspace hygienic.
Decluttering: Periodically assess your office supplies and files, and get rid of anything you no longer need. This will free up space and make your office more functional.

By choosing the right location, investing in ergonomic furniture, optimizing your layout, incorporating ample storage, personalizing your space, enhancing lighting, and maintaining cleanliness, you can transform your home office into a haven of productivity and creativity.
